Damien Hirst
The Currency
“The Currency is an artwork, and anyone who buys it will participate in this work, it’s not just about owning it. It is the most exciting project I have ever worked on by far.”
Stick or Twist ▷
UK artist Damien Hirst has revealed the details of his upcoming spectacular NFT drop.
Hirst had alluded to a big NFT project in the works and told the media he hasn’t been this excited about his art in over 20 years.
We now finally get to see what he has been up to.
Dot-to-Dot
The artwork itself is a fairly simple one, 10,000 sheets of paper all covered in his iconic hand painted dots. Each will have their own unique sentence, his signature and embossed stamp.
This is a representation of currency and that money is primarily a social phenomenon built around faith and trust. These sheets can be traded and used in the same way a pound would be.
Your local shop will not accept art for goods anytime soon, and whether these pieces create their own marketplace is yet to be seen.
However, in true vet style, Hirst has hit us with a bit of brilliance in how these pieces will be distributed.
Once purchased, you will receive the artwork as an NFT, you will then need to decide if you want to swap it for the the physical version. If you decline the swap, the physical version of your NFT will be burnt in a fire.
This is a spectacular twist and will truly test the legitimacy of NFTs and people’s faith in their value moving forward.
Damien Hirst’s spot paintings remain one of the most recognisable motifs in contemporary art and $2000 is not much money for a genuine signed physical artwork.
Who will stick and who will twist?
You better get the fire warmed up Damien, I’m team NFT ?
